Wall Street opens lower as tech leads decline

US stock indices opened the first session of the week lower as the tech sector resumed its losses after a hiatus on Friday, following earlier retail sales data from the US, while the third-quarter earnings season carries on. 

 

Earlier US data showed retail sales rose 0.1%, same as August and missing estimates of 0.7%, while core prices fell 0.1%, missing estimates of a 0.4% addition. 

 

The Empire State Manufacturing index rose to 21.1 from 19 in August, besting estimates of 20.4, while wholesale inventories rose 0.5%, adding to the 0.6% increase in July. 

 

Stock Performance  

 

As of 02:28 GMT, Standard and Poor's 500 shed 0.37%, or 10.13 points to 2,757.00, while Dow Jones slipped 0.04%, or 9.52 points to 25,330.47. 

 

Tech-heavy NASDAQ tumbled 0.98%, or 73.19 points to 7,423.70.
