The American Petroleum Institute (API) released preliminary data on crude inventories in the United States, which showed a rise by 6.9 million barrels last week, while analysts forecast a decrease by 500,000 barrels.
In addition, US gasoline stocks rose by 2.2 million barrels while distillate stocks in the country fell by 865,000 barrels last week.
